Birth injuries to mother or child

It is the hope of every family and every maternity unit that childbirth will result in a healthy baby and a healthy mother. In the majority of cases that is the outcome but occasionally problems occur and sometimes the effects can be devastating.

Recent medical advances have made pregnancy safer than ever for mother and baby but mistakes made in ante-natal care and delivery can have profound consequences. Occasionally, despite scanning, there can be a failure to identify serious abnormalities. Errors during management of labour can result in cerebral palsy, Erbs Palsy, hip dislocation and, tragically, sometimes the death of the baby.

Women may also be at risk during pregnancy and childbirth. They may suffer damage during surgery or experience inadequate suturing. Although many problems may be transitory they can sometimes lead to long term and disabling medical conditions.
